Why the return of Gossip Girl on Netflix is such an epic one.

Imagine a world without The Vampire Diaries, without Riverdale, basically without the iconic shows blessed by The CW. I know, it’s chilling to even think about it. But this was the reality that we had to live with back in 2007 and before that. A few years when, yes, we had our share of teenage drama but where the gossip was missing. It’s almost as if gossiping was invented by 13 years old teenage drama in that particular year – I know, I was one.

Gossiping has always been a thing – you cannot be a teenager without talking behind the back of your ‘so called friend’ and if you say you can, well then you’re just a liar or the friend who’s back was being trashed, sorry. But we’re not here to talk about you, we’re here to talk about the iconic book series turned into a TV show, Gossip Girl. Yes, the show that took us on the daily adventures of the misunderstood and much talked about it-girl Serena Van Der Woodsen and her brunette bestie Blair Waldorf. Think of it as your modern take on Archie’s comics Betty Cooper and Veronica Lodge (because yes, Riverdale is technically an older story than Gossip Girl.)

Gossip Girl taught us what being best friends really meant and also what being in the fashionistic (fashion and sadistic) world of New York City really felt like. Everyone wanted to be a part of the elite, even if they lived 300 km away from Manhattan – and that’s okay. At the end of the day, we all had the B to our S or vice versa. Or if you were a little bit of a shy girl like me, then you were Little J.

Where am I going with all of this, you wonder? Well, unfortunately, most Canadian teenagers today have no clue what Gossip Girl is – but this ‘cluelessness’ has finally come to an end. That’s right – thanks to Netflix Canada, Gossip Girl is coming back to the small screen. And not only today’s teenagers will be able to enjoy the world of the upper east side but the generation who grew up with it will be able to revisit their much adored past.

You know what this means though? If Netflix can bring back Gossip Girl from the dead then it certainly can do the same thing for One Tree Hill, The O.C. and the teenage show that started it all – yes, you know which one I’m talking about – DAWSON’S CREEK!

I unfortunately was too young to be a Dawson’s Creek fan but with the beauty of streaming services such as Netflix, I can totally see myself becoming Joey and having to choose between Dawson and Pacey.

All of this to say that 1) having guilty pleasure  such as watching teen show is awesome and 2) Gossip Girl definitely has all the best characteristics of all these shows that I’ve been talking about. Even though the series is based of a book series of the same name, the show creators have grasped the identity of the old school teen shows and set up a new standard that we can all appreciate in today’s teen dramas.

So, please, go do yourself a favour – turn on your Netflix, grab your croissant and start the show that is currently on everyone’s mind.
