I Finally Saw The Legendary Gad Elmaleh

If you don’t know Gad Elmaleh, well I think it’s time for you to hit up Netflix or YouTube and look him up because where I’m from and within my community, he’s an absolute legend.

Gad Elmaleh is a French-Moroccan-Jew comedian who has been doing stand-up comedy for over 20 years. He debuted in Montreal while his actual rose to fame happened in France.

I’ve known of him since I was a kid – I mean, to be honest, I don’t know a moment in my life when I didn’t know about him. I guess the fact that he used to be a student at my old private Jewish school is one of the reason he’s so famous in the Jewish community of Montreal.

So anyways, my family, my friends and I have been huge fans of him forever, and we’re obviously not the only ones. Anyone who speaks french and is from Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria, France, Quebec (and I suppose more) know him and are obsessed with him because his sketch are so relatable and the way he presents himself is almost as if he was one of our long lost cousin from Morocco.

Now, you see – Elmaleh is smart. He decided to seek help from his best friend (non other than Jerry Seinfeld – no big deal) and started learning English and American stand up and now, he does English comedy as well! So basically, he’s starting to be known internationally and not just in French-speaking countries. That’s huge.

Of course, to practice and to get more people to know him he decided to do a North American tour and I was so happy to take my uncle to the show yesterday night.

We had such a blast, laughing like crazy to each of his jokes – even the ones we already knew of. The show was based off his Netflix special ‘The American Dream.’

Even though the show was in English (we’re more used to listen to him in French) we couldn’t stop laughing. Honestly, seeing someone you’ve heard of and admired your whole life live finally is something truly awesome.

I can imagine that most of my old childhood friends and family members who already saw him live could agree that seeing him feels like meeting a long lost member of your family. I mean, just being a part of the audience felt like I was at a family reunion and it felt very relaxed.

To anyone who wants a good laugh on this chilly Saturday night, check out his special on Netflix.
