So About That ‘Charmed Reboot’

In case you guys didn’t know, The CW decided to launch a reboot of Charmed this fall with a similar synopsis than the original one which aired in the early 2000s.

The new version of Charmed premiered yesterday night on the american network attracting over a million of viewers. I mean, you could say that they succeeded in getting people to watch it. Now, was it good? Well – I’ve got some mixed feeling about it…

The show focuses on three sisters, Maggie (Sarah Jeffery) and Mel (Melonie Diaz)  who after the death of their mother discover that they have a third sister, Macy (Madeleine Mantock) and that together they are The Charmed Ones, making them the most powerful witches possessing the ‘Power of Three.’

As they discover their powers, they also meet their white lighter, Harry Greenwood, who tells them about demons and their destiny as The Charmed Ones.

So, that’s the whole premise of the story and I don’t want to give too many details about it but I do want to talk about what I enjoyed from the show and what I disliked from it.

I’ll start with what I dislike cause it’s easier.

Is this really how the show is going to portray white lighters? Way over the top cheerful and so open about who they are and everything? I liked the idea from the 90s show that white lighters were discreet and that the only reason we knew about Leo being one is because stuff happened (that I honestly can’t remember right now) and also that he fell in love with Piper. I cannot see Harry falling in love with anyone because he’s so stuck up. You know who he reminds me of? Wesley from Buffy the Vampire Slayer! Yes, ugh not down for that. But I hope that Harry isn’t really their white lighter and is simply a demon trying to fool them because if so, well that would make the show quite more entertaining!

I’m not a big fan about the idea of having a sorority on this particular show because it makes Charmed lose it’s darker appeal that it had in the 90s. I know that in the original show, the youngest one Phoebe was fresh out of college and frankly, that was a better way to introduce a younger female character. Although I dislike it, I’m not completely against the sorority cause it might be interesting to see how Mel will juggle with her sisters and her actual sisters responsibilities.

CGI Demons

Ok so one thing I loved about the old Charmed was that the demons looked like actual demons (people with actual coloured skin, horns and whatever a demon should have) but the first one they introduced felt more like an alien that Supergirl would fight with. I remember in the original Charmed our first demon was a super scary guy with horns and blood coming out of his face while the one I saw last night could’ve been easily mistaken for some kind of super villain or whatever. Not the same thing!

And now, here’s what I liked

Science VS Magic

I loved the fact that one of the sisters, Macy, is a scientist and is already such a bad ass witch. I just think that her constantly comparing science and magic is so cool and it’s definitely something that was missing from the original show – or at least an addition that was well thought off. I’m excited for the show to create more comparisons between these two worlds.

The Charmed Ones

You know, at first I was bit skeptic on the new sisters because let’s be honest here, the teaser for the show was just horrible but the pilot episode proved me wrong. The girls are actually fun and have a cool background. I really liked them and I’m so excited to follow their adventures.

So unfortunately, the dislikes are a little more heavy but I liked the show enough to get hooked on the show and will definitely be tuning in next week.

Did you watch the new Charmed? What did you think of it?
